CHICAGO — President-elect Barack Obama and Congressional Democrats are considering major expansions of government-assisted health care insurance and unemployment compensation as they begin intensive work this week on a two-year economic recovery package.
Sometimes I worry that all my anti-white collar welfare ranting is going to backfire and provide cover for these guys to create blue-collar welfare programs that will rival the TARP in size.
While I suppose, gun to head, that I'd rather see welfare for hungry and sick kids than for TARP, having the government suck another $750 billion out of the economy to pretend they're doing something for poor people as they dole out $750 billion in contracts to their cronies...and on that note, you can argue welfare might be something we should provide for sick and hungry kids to survive on -- but welfare's not an economic driver. It's the opposite. It's another brake on any chance of a quick economic recovery as capital that otherwise would come into the profit-driven markets goes instead to Washington to be doled out in the corrupt manner it always is.
Sigh.
I feel like either we are really screwed or these people must know something that I don't. This looks and smells like dooms day and they are just merrily rowing along. Sadly they are probably rowing to Niagra Falls, but c'est la vie. TJeff - I agree that until we let these banks go, we will not be able to recover.

Government needs to stay out of business.

All of this government cheese being spent is part of a government plan to fill the big black hole of leveraged losses incurred by the banks. Instead of letting this debt be liquidated via bankruptcies they are trying to fill the losses with money. Right now it may not be but down the road it will be extrem fely inflationary. People who dont think we will have to pay for this are mistaken. Not only will we have to pay for it with taxes but we will have to pay for it via the inflation tax. This is what I like to call the government slapping you in the face while the banks kick you in the ass.
